Liden & Denz opens Russian language centre in Irkutsk, Siberia!
Liden & Denz Intercultural Institute of Languages will open a new campus in Irkutsk in Eastern Siberia – just before summer 2017. After St.Petersburg, Moscow and Riga, this language centre in Irkutsk will be our fourth study destination and our first in Asia!
Irkutsk is 5000 km east of Moscow – a six hour flight from the Russian capital. By contrast, Irkutsk-Beijing will take less than 3 hours. Originally founded in the 17th century as a Cossack fortress, Irkutsk came to prominence under the influence of exiled rebels who led an uprising in 1825 against Tsar Nikolai I. The rebellion was crushed and many of its aristocratic leaders were sent to Irkutsk in Siberia. Today about 600.000 people live in this attractive Eastern Siberian metropolis.
Irkutsk is a popular stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway and most travellers take the opportunity to spend a few days or weeks here on the long trip to the Pacific or to China. Lake Baikal – the must-see tourist attraction in this region – is less than an hour’s drive from the city. The deepest and oldest freshwater lake in the world, and a UNESCO world heritage site, Lake Baikal is 700 km long and covers an area larger than Belgium. That’s a lot of water!
Plenty of good reasons therefore for Liden & Denz to open shop in Siberia. Our Irkutsk campus is located in the historical city centre in a characterful 19th century building, currently being refurbished to our design. Liden & Denz Irkutsk will be managed by Swiss national Félix Baumann, who has made the Baikal region his second home.
For the time being, Liden & Denz Irkutsk will be operating as a summer centre, from 5 June to 15 September 2017, for group courses (individual courses will be available year round starting this April). Group courses will run for a minimum of two weeks (individual courses minimum one week). Accommodation options include Siberian host-families, shared flats, studios and hotels of all categories. An authentic and exciting activities programme will be offered to all our students in Irkutsk.
Co-founder and owner of Liden & Denz, Walter Denz: “We have been working towards this moment for a long time. Opening the language centre in Irkutsk adds Siberia, a very attractive tourist region, to our portfolio of destinations. We plan to offer Russian courses in Irkutsk to travellers on the Transsib, to visitors to Lake Baikal and to anybody else who has never been to Siberia. Together with Félix Baumann, who will run the Irkutsk centre, we share a passion for quality language training and for the Baikal region as a trending destination”
