Angus Dunn recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

Genki Japanese and culture school offers exceptional value for money for shared classes and private lessons. It's location is exceptional, in the heart of Shinjuku with a plethora of public transport options just a few minutes walk away. The teachers are passionate and knowledgeable, and I must say the optional extra speaking classes are very worth it. The class sizes are small which guarantees plenty of one on one learning time with very experienced teachers. Two weeks at this school has been more helpful than a semester studying Japanese at Melbourne University. 9/10

mcsn recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

I studied at the Tokyo campus from February to May this year, 15 weeks in total. I was a complete beginner when I came but felt that I learned quickly, probably mostly thanks to competent teachers and small classes. The first weeks we were only four students in my class. However, winter seemed to be 'low season' and after those first weeks we were usually seven, which is still not bad of course but definitely made a difference. The classes on the lowest levels usually had more students than the higher ones. With seven students the small classrooms feel quite full. But no matter what time of the year you come, both class sized and teaching seems to be a lot better than at other language schools. This one might be a little more expensive but it will be worth it.

I also think the pace is higher compared to many other schools, but sometimes I still felt that we spent a lot of time repeating . In the end I am happy about that though, since I would probably have forgotten a lot by this time if we hadn't. Also, the additional classes you can take (like conversation and kanji) are quite unique and good if you want to 'fill your time' with more than the standard classes plus homework. Kanji and conversation classes (especially conversation I think) are both useful and affordable.

Another thing I liked about the school is that you don't have to choose between morning or afternoon classes (like in many other schools). Your schedule looks different from week to week but I liked it. Some days I could sleep out and come to school around lunch, other days I started 9:30 and had the whole afternoon off instead - perfect when you want to explore the city. The school's location in Shinjuku is, btw, a very good starting point for exploring Tokyo. Finally, not only did I improve my Japanese, I also had a lot of fun and made many new friends. The staff and teachers are all nice and helpful and there's a good mix with students of different ages and nationalities.

Dennis Van der Veen recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

I studied at GenkiJACS starting mid April for four weeks. It was an experience of a lifetime. I took the standard course with additional Conversation Classes. Classes were 4-8 students big and you really notice the difference when classes grow bigger. I think 8 students is the maximum but i prefer to be in a class with 4 or 5 people.
The teachers are all warm and very friendly. So you sometimes easily forget that they are your teachers. Off course not only the teachers are fantastic but so is the reception staff. Whenever I had a question, ranging from fun places to visit to booking tickets, they helped me enthusiastically.
Every friday there is a graduation ceremony. Each student that leaves needs to give a speech and receives a certificate. The school also organises after school activities. Because it was golden week some classes where dropped but they arranged a boat trip with dinner and a Taiko initiation. Every week there is a movie night and a small party.
I made a lot of new friends from all over the world there. For me it was my first time studying abroad and i had such a great experience that at this time i am already planning to go back to GenkiJACS a second time in December.

This is the second time that I attended this language school, and I can say my experience and impression of the school only got better. The class room environment is just good enough for the number of students in the class, and the school location is merely few minutes away from Hakata station, which conveniently is the station that has subways, JR, and many stores. The teachers and staff are absolutely fantastic. In truth, I have never met so many teachers who are as supportive and humorous as those in this language school. You not only can ask teachers questions of the grammar that you don't understand after class time, the reception staff is even extremely helping in assisting us to find fun places around the area and book tickets.
I would highly recommend this language school and I would love to come again if I have time!! :)

petert recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

After having studied Japanese in adult educ classes in the US for 4-5 years, I attended GenkiJACS in Tokyo for 7 weeks and took the beginner level 2 Japanese language and advanced conversation classes. Overall, I found my time at the school very worthwhile and my language skills improved noticeably. I recommend GenkiJACS to those who want to study Japanese in a fun environment.
The school uses the Genki textbook (Japan Times, pub.), which is an excellent series that I had used in my previous classes. Students take a placement test upon arrival and the school did a good job of putting me in an appropriate level class. All classes are ongoing - so when you arrive you have to just jump into whatever lesson that class is studying. The number of class hours per week, in class review of grammar lessons, homework, and tests all reinforce what you learn and allow you to make real progress.
Key strengths of GenkiJACS are the teachers and support staff. The teachers are all very skilled, friendly, and enthusiastic, and I was quite impressed with how well they handled the constant flow of new students into the school. Teachers rotate among classes, so that in my first week I had about six or seven different teachers. At first it all seems rather chaotic, but then you see that they have a well-structured system in place. Lessons are carefully planned out and teachers follow the curriculum with great fidelity, so it all works well. And I quickly came to appreciate having the opportunity to experience the different personalities and teaching styles. The support staff are also extremely helpful and I always found them willing to assist with any problems or questions I might have.
One challenging aspect of GenkiJACS is the range of student commitments to studying the language. Students can enroll from anywhere between two weeks and several months and not everyone takes their studies equally seriously. Students can do their homework--or not; show up for classes on time--or not. The teachers do their best to balance maintaining a light-hearted atmosphere with encouraging everyone to work hard--and most students do apply themselves. But occasionally I found some of my classmates attitudes or behaviors a little disruptive. I quickly learned, however, that I shouldn’t worry too much about what other students were doing. Like most things, you get out of the experience what you put into it. Nevertheless, people who want a more serious learning environment, and are able to do so, might want to consider a university-based program instead.
In summary, GenkiJACS provided a worthwhile experience and a fun place to study Japanese. GenkiJACS provided me with an opportunity to enhance my speaking and writing skills and has given me a good foundation for continuing my Japanese language studies. I’m definitely glad that I chose to spend time there!

KyriakosFountoukakos recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

I studied at Genki JACS Tokyo for 7 weeks from February to end March 2016. I started as a complete beginner with just a few Japanese words I had picked up on previous trips to Japan. The school uses the Genki book for beginners and it is a requirement to be able to read and write Hiragana before you arrive. On Day 1 we were given a test to test knowledge of Hiragana.

Classes are excellent. Small size (up to 8 people max). The teachers are simply fantastic. Knowledgeable, fun and caring. I achieved excellent results in just 7 weeks being able to read and write both Hiragana and Katakana (and a bit of kanji) and to hold basic conversations.

The reception staff are also super friendly and efficient. A very likeable bunch.

Location is simply fantastic. Close to Shinjuku Sanchome station with shops, restaurants, Starbucks etc all within a 5-10 min walk from the school.

The school was also a lot of fun! The atmosphere is great with a friendly crowd mainly composed of European students from various countries in Europe. Most students were in their 20s with a few in their 30s and even fewer in their 40s (yes I am in that bracket...). We formed a close knit group of friends and it was just great to hang out, go for lunch together, karaoke, dinners etc etc.

I also opted for the culture programme doing a combination of traditional and pop culture. This was interesting but perhaps less well designed. The activities could be better.

The school also offers some other social activities like movie night, or dinner every Friday at nearby locations.

Every Friday there is a graduation ceremony. I felt a real sense of achievement delivering a mini speech in Japanese on my graduation day. And I felt that I had genuinely enjoyed the course and made new friends for life. I hope to be back to study again at Genki JACS!

Megumi Voight recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

I studied at GenkiJACS for one month. I had previously studied Japanese in college, but had taken a couple of years off. Upon arriving at school, they administered a placement test. The classes were based off of skill and ranged from 2-6 people. The teachers rotated among the classes, which provided a variety of teaching styles and dialects (which helped improve my listening skills). The students were also awesome as there was so much cultural diversity! I learned so much in just one month. I highly recommend GenkiJACS to someone who is serious about learning Japanese - there is class everyday and oftentimes, there is homework, so you do have to take it seriously to improve!

Daniel Ben-Canaan recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

I have studied in GenkiJACS Tokyo branch for a period of four months from the beginning of March until the end of July.

The experience was not less than pleasurable. All the stages from the enrollment until the last of day of school were really good.

Unlike many other schools, GenkiJACS was quick to reply to my mail of inquiry and has given me all the information I wanted and more. I have been in direct contact with the school all the time prior to my arrival. The detailed site of the school is also commendable.

The school was centrally located, a two minute walk from Shinjuku-Sanchome station. The classes and the lounge were well equipped.

Upon the first day of arrival I have been greeted with welcoming smiles from the staff and has felt welcome ever since. Both coordinators went out of their way to help me with everything and anything and made my stay much more comfortable.

All the teachers were very experienced and the classes were fun. The study material was carefully selected, and the classes and in-class exercises were well prepared.

I have also enjoyed the extra-curricular activities.

During my study period my Japanese level has risen substantially, and I am looking forward to return for a longer period to study further.

Gregor Waldhauser recommends the Language School Genki Japanese & Culture School Tokyo (Genki JACS).

The Genki JACS school in Tokyo is the perfect school for me. Just to set a base line here: I enjoyed language training in France (2x), Russia (1x) and now in Japan, for the very first time.
1) Location: well, the location is PERFECT, close to subway and train station of Shinjuku, department stores nearby (excellent for a quick lunch break), sights etc.
2) staff: the staff at the Geni JACS is probably the closest thing you can have to a family abroad, they are ALL extremely helpful, very patient (no matter what crazy ideas or wishes you come up with) and take care of you in a way you might not be used to when coming from Europe.
3) teachers: GREAT teachers, with a sense of humor, never losing focus, always friendly but serious enough to keep you going and reach the ambitious goals; they handle everyone, youngsters and old-timers (like me) alike;
4) the excursions and culture program: this is the only thing that I had to criticize, and I already gave input to the school itself; the program is GREAT, but there is never enough time to fully live it! e.g. the tea ceremony - wonderful to watch, but not enough time to fully try it on your own; or the Origami museum/paper manufacture, GREAT to watch, but only a child size origami to do on your own (which takes about 1 minute); nevertheless, the ideas are wonderful and the people at the various sites are wonderful too, but it is simply not enough time;
all in all, I can’t wait to got there again, maybe even longer! Highly recommendable!
